What is the Indianapolis Area Code?

Area codes 317 and 463 are the North American Numbering Plan area codes for Indianapolis and nine counties in central Indiana. This includes Marion, Boone, Hancock, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Morgan and Shelby. Until 1997, the entire region was served by the 317 area code. However, due to the growth of Indianapolis and its surrounding areas, the 765 area code was created to accommodate the increased demand.

The Indianapolis area code is an important part of communication in the region. It is used to identify a specific geographic location and to make sure that calls are routed correctly. It is also used to differentiate between local and long-distance calls. When making a call within the Indianapolis area code, you will need to dial all 10 digits of the phone number.

This includes the area code followed by the seven-digit phone number. If you are calling from outside of the 317 or 463 area codes, you will need to dial 1 plus the area code and then the seven-digit phone number. It is important to note that area codes are not static and can change over time. This is due to population growth or shifts in population density.

If you live in or near Indianapolis, it is important to stay up-to-date on any changes in your area code.
